The Second Painting In The Plaza Mayor Series

I’m excited to share the second painting in my commissioned three-part series inspired by
Plaza Mayor in Madrid, Spain, circa the 1930s. This piece will sit at the center of the series
and is simply titled “The Plaza.” Painted at a large 2 x 3 foot scale, this piece captures the
moment you step through one of Plaza Mayor’s grand stone arches and emerge into the
heart of the square. Through the archway, the historic buildings open into a lively gathering
place where townspeople stroll across the plaza beneath a glowing pink Spanish sky. At the center stands the iconic statue overlooking the square, a quiet witness to centuries of daily life, conversation, and celebration.

I loved using deep indigo tones to frame the scene with the dramatic stone arch, allowing the viewer to feel as if they are stepping into the plaza themselves. The contrast of the cool architecture and the warm sky creates a sense of anticipation, like arriving somewhere special. This painting will be the centerpiece of the three-part Plaza Mayor series, connecting the story between the market scene and the final painting that completes the collection.

Creating this series has been such a joy, and I’m grateful to the collector who invited me to bring this historic place to life through watercolor. Thank you, as always, for following along on this artistic journey. With gratitude, Maya Maya’s Artbeat
