How to Take a Great Reference Photo for Your Commission

The photograph you provide is an important part of creating your custom artwork. These simple tips apply to people, pets, homes, buildings, vehicles, flowers, and other meaningful subjects.

1. Begin with Good Lighting

2. Find the Most Interesting Angle

3. Keep Your Camera Level with the Subject

4. Make Sure the Important Details Are Clear

5. Keep the Colors Natural

6. Simplify the Surroundings

7. Take Plenty of Photographs

Whenever possible, send the original, full-size image rather than a screenshot or a photograph downloaded from social media. If your reference is an older photograph, send the clearest version available. Even if the picture is not perfect, please share it with me we may still be able to create something beautiful from it.

Most importantly, choose photographs that capture what you love about your subject. Those personal details are what make a commissioned painting truly special.
