A New Commission: Plaza Mayor, Madrid, Circa 1930
Hello friends, One of the greatest joys of being an artist is when a collector invites me to create something truly special. Recently, I had the pleasure of working on a commissioned threepainting series inspired by Plaza Mayor in Madrid, Spain, during the 1930s.
Each painting in this series is quite large, 2 feet by 3 feet, allowing for incredible detail and storytelling within the scene. The first piece is called “The Market.” This painting captures the energy and charm of everyday life in Plaza Mayor nearly a century ago. Market vendors gather beneath striped awnings, townspeople stroll through the square, and a fruit stand, “frutería”, anchors the scene with the quiet rhythm of daily commerce.
I loved bringing this scene to life with a limited palette of rich blues and soft washes, allowing the architecture, people, and movement of the market to tell the story. This is the first painting in a three-part series, and I cannot wait to share the next two pieces as they unfold.
Creating custom commissioned artwork like this is always an incredible experience, working closely with a client to transform an idea into something meaningful and lasting. Thank you, as always, for supporting my creative journey and allowing me to keep painting the stories of places near and far. With gratitude, Maya Maya’s Artbeat

Our January watercolor workshop at the Moore-Lindsay Historical House Museum was such a wonderful time! Students of all skill levels gathered to learn watercolor techniques while creating their own charming winter snowman paintings. It’s always so inspiring to see everyone’s creativity come to life and to spend a few relaxing hours painting together.
If you missed the January class, I’d love for you to join us at the next workshop on Friday, April 24 from 6–8 PM or Saturday, April 25 from 2–4 PM. Spots are limited, so be sure to reserve yours at www.normanmuseum.org/watercolor . I hope to paint with you soon! ✨
