Hi, I'm Maya!
I'm a self-taught watercolor artist, educator, and the heart behind Maya's Artbeat.
My journey with watercolor began on March 20, 2020, when I picked up a paintbrush during a season when the world had slowed down. I challenged myself to create a "painting of the day," and somewhere between the water, color, and paper, I discovered something completely unexpected-a passion that brought me both peace and purpose.
What began at my dining room table quickly grew into a small business and a beautiful new chapter in my life.
Today, I create colorful watercolor art inspired by nature, flowers, birds, Oklahoma landmarks, world travel, and the everyday moments that make life special. I also love creating custom artwork that tells someone's story-whether it is a beloved pet, a childhood home, a wedding bouquet, or a place filled with precious memories.
Before becoming a professional artist, I earned my degree in Elementary Education from the University of Oklahoma. Teaching has always been part of who I am, so it feels natural that art and education eventually found their way back to each other. Through my watercolor workshops and private instruction, I have the joy of helping people of all ages discover their own creativity. My classes are relaxed, welcoming, and filled with encouragement-because I truly believe art is for everyone!
I'm especially inspired by the message in the book Miss Rumphius by Barbara Cooney - "You must do something to make the world more beautiful.". That idea has stayed with me throughout my life, and now I get to live it through every painting I create, every student I encourage, and every connection made through my art.
